Scottsdale Drives

One Saturday. One long way home.

I·5:23 a.m.

The best drives in Scottsdale begin before the valet stands are unfolded - when Fifth Avenue is still wet from the night crews and the road north is empty in a way it almost never is by nine.

II·Leaving Old Town

A weekender, a thermos, and a key.

The galleries are still dark. A single lamp burns under the portal at the old saddlery. She carries the bag; he carries the coffee. The car has been sitting all night and the metal is cold to the touch.

By the time the city wakes up, they will be an hour past Cave Creek.

A couple in their mid-40s in soft linen and cashmere walking together toward an Aventurine Green Porsche 911 at the curb in Old Town Scottsdale, a tan leather weekender in her hand, a thermos in his, the dawn sky just beginning to turn pink behind the adobe rooflines
Old Town Scottsdale - 5:47 a.m.

III·Cave Creek

Coffee, before anyone is awake.

A small wooden table outside a place that opens at six. Two ceramic cups, a vase of dried wildflowers, a conversation neither of them needs to finish. The car is parked at the curb, breathing.

Nobody else is here yet. That is the entire point.

Cave Creek - 6:38 a.m.
An Aventurine Green Porsche 911 in motion mid-corner on the empty two-lane ribbon of Rio Verde Road, a saguaro flat stretching out around it, the blue silhouette of Four Peaks rising on the distant horizon under low warm morning light

IV·Rio Verde Road

Past Carefree the city ends mid-sentence. The desert finishes the thought for you.

V·Two Things You Remember

A man's hand resting on the wood-and-leather gear shifter of a Porsche 911, Mojave Beige interior, predawn cobalt blue light coming through the windshield
The shifter, before the sun
A tight detail of the front wheel and fender of an Aventurine Green Porsche 911, fine desert dust visible across the paint, the hard tactile shadow of a creosote branch falling diagonally across the metal
Fender shadow, mid-morning

Years later, the photographs you keep are never the wide ones. They are the hand on the shifter. The shadow of a creosote across the fender. The small evidence that you were actually there.

Wide landscape of the Bartlett Lake overlook north of Scottsdale, an Aventurine Green Porsche 911 parked on a dusty dirt pullout in the foreground, a couple standing small at the edge of the overlook looking out across the deep blue lake and tan ochre ridges fading to the horizon

VI·Bartlett Lake

You can see Mexico from here. Almost.

Or you can convince yourself you can, which is close enough.

Intimate portrait of the couple leaning against the rear quarter of an Aventurine Green Porsche 911 at a Sonoran desert pullout, her arm wrapped around him with her head resting at his shoulder, a brushed steel insulated travel tumbler in his hand, looking out at distant blue ridges in soft warm late-morning light

VII·Desert Silence

There is a place past Cave Creek where the radio gives up on its own.
The dramatic granite boulder spires of Pinnacle Peak rising under a hard midday sun, an Aventurine Green Porsche 911 parked alone on a sandy pullout in the lower foreground, the couple walking together as small figures up a short sandy trail toward the peak

VIII·Pinnacle Peak

You park. You walk a little. You come back.

The trail is shorter than you remember. The peak is taller. From the saddle you can see the car as a small green dot at the bottom of the wash, exactly where you left it, waiting.

A high elevated angle of an Aventurine Green Porsche 911 threading a narrow switchback on the Apache Trail, red and ochre rock walls rising on either side, soft warm late afternoon golden light raking across the canyon, a faint plume of dust trailing behind the car

IX·Apache Trail

One lane, no shoulder, a hundred and twenty years of mining road carved into the rock.

X·Golden Hour

She walks out alone.

The car is somewhere behind her, cooling on the dirt pullout. She does not turn around. The ridges go blue, then bluer, then the last one is barely an idea of a mountain. The wind in the creosote is the only sound, and even that is intermittent.

She has not said anything in twenty minutes. She does not notice.

A woman in flowing cream linen standing alone with her back to camera at the edge of a desert overlook in golden hour, looking out across layered blue Arizona ridges fading to evening haze, warm rim light catching her hair, the Aventurine Green Porsche 911 visible as a small presence parked on the dirt pullout behind her
Overlook above the spur - golden hour

XI·What We Brought

Everything fits.

The open front trunk of the Aventurine Green Porsche 911 at a gravel pullout in late golden hour, carefully arranged inside: a worn tan leather weekender bag, a vintage film camera, a folded oatmeal and rust plaid wool blanket, a brushed steel thermos, and a small loose bunch of yellow desert wildflowers laid across the bag
Gravel pullout - late golden hour

A worn tan leather weekender. A film camera neither of them really knows how to use. A wool blanket the color of oatmeal and rust. A steel thermos. A small bunch of yellow desert wildflowers picked at the last pullout, laid carefully across the bag.

An Aventurine Green Porsche 911 from behind driving south on an empty desert highway at deep blue hour, taillights glowing warm amber, the scattered warm lights of the Scottsdale skyline visible on the horizon, the McDowell Mountains silhouetted to the left

XII·Returning

The skyline comes back in pieces - first a few warm lights, then the rest of it, all at once.

Late blue hour on a quiet north Scottsdale residential driveway, an Aventurine Green Porsche 911 parked in the foreground cooling, a low modern adobe desert home behind it with warm amber light spilling from a single tall window, the couple's silhouettes walking together toward the front door, a saguaro silhouette to the side

XIII·Home

The drive is over. Neither of them is ready to say so.

A single warm window. A car cooling in the driveway. The desert getting on with whatever it was doing.

XIV·Closing Reflection

Some places you visit. Scottsdale you drive. The road is the part you remember.
